Reimagine God: Made in His image.

Imago Dei is Latin for “Image of God” and it’s a theological doctrine common to Jews, Christians, and Muslims that denotes humankind’s relation to God. Imago Dei is the idea that we are moral and spiritual creatures who have been created in God’s image. Do you see God reflected back to you when you look at yourself? Do you see Him when you look at other people? Our view of the image of God affects how we treat ourselves and others.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
–Genesis 1:1-3 NLT

Then God said, Let us make human beings in our image… So God created human beings in his own image.
–Genesis 1:26-27 NLT

The first thing we need to realize about God is that is not singular or binary. He is Trinity. Genesis tells that He is the creator, the word and the spirit. He is all three at the same time. And He also made us Trinity. We are spirit, soul and body. We are Trinity and the people around us are Trinity as well. We are beautifully complicated human beings and we should treat each other as such.

Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.
–1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 NLT

In order to live into His image, we have to better understand who God is and therefore, who we are. For most us, this will require removing labels that have been put on us or renaming who we’ve been told that we are in order to see ourselves as holy, as God calls us holy. We also have to understand that there is a temporary self and a permanent self. One that is for this life and one that will last forever. Understanding the two will give us a deeper love for ourselves and each other as we begin to look past the temporary into the permanent spiritual beings God created and called good.

For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.
–Galatians 3:26-28 NLT

We have to rid ourselves from toxic manhood and womanhood and become united in Christ to be one in him. We have to have the courage to remove whatever labels we have put on other people or people groups to see their humanity instead. When we look at other people, even and especially those we have grouped away from ourselves, we are looking at people who are one with us. We are all united in Him.
