Reimagine God: Not a product with a promise.
There’s an old rabbinical term called “Turning the Gem” that Jewish rabbis used to describe the way they looked at scripture in a different light or from a different perspective. As we continue our series on deconstructing and reconstructing our faith, we will continue to dig into the scriptures to see if we can find new meaning there.
If we want to experience more of God we have to ask ourselves this question: do we relate to God as if He is a product with a promise or as a person with a presence?
Maybe you can relate to the idea of Jesus being taught, preached, branded and sold as a product. Like if you prayed enough or had enough faith or said the right words that you life in Jesus would be simple and carefree. Maybe He was preached as a miracle cure, a prosperity pill or the way to reach your destiny. Maybe He even came with the eternal lifetime warranty and guarantee.
Sadly, “selling” this kind of Christianity doesn’t work and that’s why some people are walking away from it.
My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
–Colossians 2:2-3 NIV
Fortunately, God is a person with a presence and we get to relate to Him in a deep and meaningful relationship. God is also full of riddles and mystery. But the word mystery doesn’t mean something that cannot be found out! It means that He will be revealed slowly as we move forward, getting to know God more and more.
I have never called you ‘“servants” because a master doesn’t confide in his servants, and servants don’t always understand what the master is doing. But I call you my most intimate and cherished friends, for I reveal to you everything that I’ve heard from my Father.
–John 15:15 TPT
Jesus insists on calling us friends. And just like every friendship, its grows and deepens as we spend quality time together. Set aside some time to get to know Jesus in a new way and ask Him to reveal Himself to you today.
