Reimagine God: Your next move.

As we continue reimagining God and deconstructing our faith, we need to make sure we don’t get stuck. God is okay with your questions, your doubts and your uncertainty but He also wants us to continue digging in and wrestling with them. He wants us to rebuild as we deconstruct and relearn Him as we unlearn things that don’t fit our faith anymore. We need to make sure we separate God from church so we don’t leave Him if we take a step back from religion.

The Lord isn’t slow to keep his promise, as some think of slowness, but he is patient toward you, not wanting anyone to perish but all to change their hearts and lives.
–2 Peter 3:9 CEB

God isn’t waiting for you to get it together. He doesn’t look at you and wish you were a better person. He loves to watch us grow but He is also ridiculously patient us as we learn to accept who we are and live into the best possible versions of ourselves. He wants us to engage with Him, to ask questions and understand why we believe the things we do. Could it be possible that the whole point of having a relationship with Jesus is to be different people at the end of our lives than we were when we first met Him?

“Be strong, Zerubbabel. Be strong, Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people still left in the land. And now get to work, for I am with you” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. My Spirit remains among you, just as I promised when you came out of Egypt. So do not be afraid.”
–Haggai 2:4-5

God has not left you. No matter how far you think you have moved away from Him, He has never left you. It may seem like He has left because you’re not hearing from Him but could it be because you’ve stopped engaging and walked away from your relationship with Him? You can let go of all of the “religious” things and still be very much in the center of God’s presence. But He is always with you, no matter where you happen to wander.

The Lord of Armies says this: “Think carefully about your ways. Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house; and I will be pleased with it and be glorified,” says the Lord.
–Haggai 1:7-8

God wants us to know that He is with us so we don’t have to fear the rebuilding but He also wants to keep going, keep pursuing Him, keep growing. Thinking carefully about our ways challenges us to see if what we believe or do aligns with what God would say or do but it also gives us permission to think! You don’t have to take what you’ve heard in blind belief and wear it like a badge. Learn what is out there, hold it up to the heart of God and see what makes sense, letting go of what doesn’t.

Reimagining God and deconstructing your faith isn’t about finding the right answers. It’s about wrestling with the right questions. We need to hold the yes/and more than the either/or. And you don’t have to go through this alone. Who can you ask to come alongside you and help you rebuild, even if it isn’t their mess to clean up? Where is God calling you to move forward in rebuilding?
